Reading: In reading this week we will start the week with breaking words into parts. How we can solve words by looking at the beginning, middle, and end of the words. We are going to learn about vowel teams and using snap words to help us solve unknown words. Students will also learn about “unusual suspects” like compound words and words with a hyphen. We will end the week with bringing it back to smoothing out our reading (reading fluently).

Writing: We are continuing to write How-Tos this week.  We will add introductions and conclusions this week.  We will also work on elaborating our writing by adding to the pictures with labels and arrows and we will add to our words with tips and cautions.  We will check that our writing uses exact action words such as scoop and pour instead of put.  Next week we will begin our All About writing.

Word Study: This week we will continue to learn the digraphs wh, ch, sh, th, ck.  We will continue to work on tapping out words to spell them and learn about marking up our words. Our new trick words will be we, she, he, be, me, or and for.

Math:  This week we are finishing up our unit on addition and subtraction strategies.  We will work on applying these strategies and focusing on the strategy that works best for them.  We will have a practice test early in the week and end the week with a test.

Content:  This week we are beginning our first Social Studies Unit: Families Now and Long Ago.  Our focus over the next couple weeks will be to answer the question: Why are families important and how do families grow and change over time?  This week we will be reading books around the topic and responding to them in our notebooks and in whole class conversations.

As always if you have any questions, let me know!
