Reading:
This week in reading we are continuing to do our work as word detectives! Last week we received our word detective badges, the students were very excited! We are going to focus in on “snap” words this week. How word detectives read some words in a snap and use those words to help solve unknown words. Students are also going to learn that after they work hard to solve an unknown word they can make it into a snap word! Here are some examples of snap words that we have learned this week in word work: his, is, the, of, and, and a. If students are struggling with snap words in their books at home, these are words that are okay to tell them because they often do not sound like they are spelled. So it is better to tell them and have them repeat it and look for it in other parts of their books.

Writing: We are celebrating the end of our Small Moment writing early this week.  We will have our end of the unit On Demand writing.  Students will be bringing home their writing from their writing folders. Please take some time to look through the writing with your child.  Please remember that we are working on spelling strategies and specific craft moves and the writing that you see might not be “perfect”...yet!   We will be starting our How To Writing unit at the end of the week.

Word Study: Today a packet is coming home that you might choose to use at home to support the word study work that we are doing at school.  This week we will learn the digraphs wh, ch, sh, th, ck.  We will continue to work on tapping out words to spell them.  Our new trick words will be as, has, to, and into.

Math: This week we are continuing to work on our counting on strategies.  We will begin to work with subtraction. We teach subtraction through picture drawing first and then move to equation writing. We will be sending home our first math homework sheet on Wednesday night.  This sheet does NOT need to come back to school.  It is just some extra practice for at home and for you to see the kind of work that we are doing at school.  Although, if you do notice that something is tricky or your child is struggling feel free to let me know.

Content:  This week in content we are comparing plants, animals, and humans.  We will be thinking about what we need to grow and live.  Towards the end of the week we will be doing our post assessment to finish up our organism units.

As always if you have any questions, let me know!
