10/9 to 10/13

Hello,

Scholastic Book Orders:
We will be having our first Scholastic book order! Unfortunately I did not receive paper copies from Scholastic with my move to NDLC. I will have them for the next ordering period though. But you can still order online!  To order online go to scholastic.com/newparent.  Our class code is QJMYM. And the Scholastic order for this month will be due October 25th.

Also, coming home you will see a slip for your child to enter our classroom dollar book club.  If you decide you would like your child to receive a new book each month, fill out the form and send back $8 (a new book Oct.-May.)  I will order the book each month and send it home!
They will be due October 17th.

Reading:
In reading this week we are continuing our new Word Detective unit. We are having missions sent to us that will help us with our word solving. We are trying to earn our word detective badges! We have been learning to look closely at the whole word, how to use everything we know to solve a word, to read snap words in a snap, and how to do a slow check if we think we solved a word.

Writing:  This week in writing we will continue writing our narrative small moment stories. We will continue to study how an author makes their stories special with pop out words and esact actions. We will also be working together to create an editing checklist that we will use to check over our finished writing pieces.

Word Study: In Unit 2 we will teach/review how to blend and read three-sound short vowel words as well as how to segment and spell them. We will learn about sentence structure with capital letters at the beginning of a sentence and periods at the end. We will also introduce tick words (sight words) that students will memorize. When we have a new trick word we will write them in our agenda so you can see the word we are introducing this week.

Math: This week in math we are continuing to learn strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems. We will learn efficient ways to solve our math problems and have math talks to explain our methods and thinking. One efficient way to solve math addition problems is to count on from the bigger number. Students will practice that method through math games and lesson this week.

Content:  This week we will be sending our plants home. We are continuing our unit on organisms this week. We will be receiving our animals for our terrariums!
