4/17 to 4/20

Hello,

Wow! What a crazy storm. I hope you were all able to stay off of the roads as much as possible and spend time cozied up indoors! We have a busy 4 day week ahead of us. The field trip is tomorrow (4/18/18) and students will be eating lunch at school.

Thank you to everyone that brought in boxes for writing! We have been busy creating our book boxes to hold all of our writing. And another thank you for all of your work with the Knowledge-a-thon! Students had a lot of fun and it is such a great fundraiser for our wonderful school! Here is a summary of what we are learning this week:

Upcoming Events:
April 18: Field Trip
April 19: Family Night
April 20: Wear Green and Blue to celebrate Earth Day
April 26: Dress like a Movie Star

Lunch Change:
April 19th: # 1 is a walking taco not a soft shell taco

Reading: In reading this week we are starting our new unit: Nonfiction Book Clubs. Students helped reorganize our library this week to be able to start finding some topics that they are interested in! For the remainder of the week we will be book shopping, get organized into groups, and talk about how nonfiction readers report out to their group about new things they are learning. We will talk about how we report out using an expert voice.

Writing: This week in writing we are finishing up our book boxes that will hold all of our series writing. On Thursday we will start our new unit which is Writing Projects. Students will be discovering new types of writing and relook at old writing that we did. They will get to choose a writing genre they want to study and pick out a project they want to work on. It is a fun unit that gives the students a lot of freedom that helps them get ready for 2nd grade!

Word Study:  In word study this week we are finishing Unit 9, and will start Unit 10 at the end of the week. In Unit 10 students are learning about new suffixes like -ing and -es. The packet will come home at the end of the week.

Math: In math this week we finishing up our unit on adding with 2 digit numbers. Students have been doing a great job being problem solvers and trying different strategies to solve. They are starting to notice what strategies are fastest and using it to solve. There will be a math sheet that comes home tomorrow.

Science: This week in science we are finishing up with our inquiry into light and sound. We will start our next social studies unit at the end of the week, all about communities!

Let me know if you have any questions!
