4/30 to 5/4

Hello,

Here comes May! I am hoping the weather cooperates and we keep getting those warmer temps. I am going to be sending home all winter gear that is still in their lockers: snow pants, boots, mittens, hats, or extra sweatshirts. Be on the lookout for those. If you are still missing items please check out the school's lost and found, there are a lot of items in there!

Here is the specials schedule for May:

Upcoming Events:
May 3rd: Fang Ticket Orders Due
May 7th: PSC Meeting
May 22nd: Family Night
May 24th: Last Book Order Due!:
https://clubs.scholastic.com/ Class code: QJMYM
May 25th and 28th: No School
May 30th: 1st Grade Community Walking Field Trip

Reading: In reading this week we are continuing to work in our nonfiction book clubs. We will be
talking about how we can compare the books that we are studying. In our books we will also
mark expert words in the text and think about what they mean. We will be ending the week with
talking about how to present to our groups, how when we read them something we wrote about
our books we use an expert voice.

Writing: In writing this week we are continuing our writing projects. Students are starting to write
within their genre. We will be talking about how to grow in our writing by looking at texts that are
in that genre that we really like and learning from those, working within our group to make our
writing stronger, and by creating checklists within our groups to make our writing the best that it
can be!

Word Study: You may have noticed the new items added to the agenda for this week. I added in
six trick words from the last unit because they are tough ones that need a little more practice.
To practice at home you can have your child spell them out loud to you or practice writing them.

Math: In math this week we are continuing to work in Unit 7: Time, Shapes, and Measuring. We
are focusing on telling time on analog clocks and digital clocks. We have been practicing telling
time when it is a new hour and at the end of this week we will start practicing telling time to the
half hour.

Social Studies: This week we are creating our own classroom market.  Each student is choosing
a good or service that they want to sell. We will be making advertisements, signs, goods, and
using pretend money.

Let me know if you have any questions!
