5/7 to 5/11

Hello,

Here are some summer/warm weather reading tips from our reading specialist Mrs Steif!
  • Keep books in the car so the kids can read while traveling.
  • Keep a bag of books handy to grab before leaving to watch a sibling play
    a sport.
  • “Stream” a series - check out books in a series from the library.
  • Play “Book Club” - set up a book club as part of a play date.
  • Try organizing your books at home into fun categories like: Book that
make you LOL, Gross Things, Tear Jerkers, Books that Make you Laugh,
    Family Favorites….
  • Set a goal for number of books to read or number of pages to read and
    keep track.
  • Read to a younger neighbor, sibling or friend.
  • Partner-read with an adult.

**Look for the field trip form coming home for the end of the school year trip!

Reading: In reading this week we are finishing up our nonfiction book clubs. Students have
been choosing topics to study together and becoming strong nonfiction readers. This week
we are learning a few new ways to stop and write about our learning. For example writing
misconceptions we had until we read our book to learn somethings new: “I used to think…
but now I know…” and using text evidence to back up our thinking!

Writing: This week we will be looking for a mentor text to use to support the writing in our genre.
When looking at mentor text we can think What did the author do?  Why did the author do it?
How can I try it in my writing? We will make our own checklist to use and set goals for ourselves
as we continue our writing.

Word Study: This week are beginning unit 11.  We are focusing on long vowel with a silent
e at the end. Examples: cap→ cape  plan→ plane kit→ kite

Math:This week we will be working with shapes: 2D and 3D.  We will be look
at the different characteristics and be able to name and sort them.  We will continue
practicing time to the hour and half hour.

Social Studies: The week we are having our market.  Students are having the opportunity
to sell and shop.  We will follow up the market experience with some reflecting on
spending and saving.
Here are a few photos from our first day!
