11/6 to 11/10

Hello,

Reminders:
  • Remember to sign up for portfolio conferences.  https://ptcfast.com/schools/NDLC
  • Return red folders on Tuesday November 7th.
  • Please return field trips forms by November 17th.

This month New Directions is showing how to BE Thankful!  As a way to bring us together as a school community we are going to have an "Appreciation Station" set up for students and families to use at conferences.  At this station you will be able to write a note to someone you are thankful for in your lives. It can be someone from the school or someone from somewhere else in your lives.  Please look for the station outside the cafeteria by the 4K classroom and stop by to let someone know you are thankful for them!

Reading: In reading this week we will be starting our new unit. We are going to be reading nonfiction books! We will start with organizing our libraries and seeing what books we can check out while we book shop. We will also learn how to preview (or take a sneak peek) of a nonfiction text. We will end the week with talking about how we can slow down while reading nonfiction books because we can learn and talk about so much that happens on just one page!

Writing: In writing this week we are also starting a new unit about writing non fiction chapter books. Can you believe first graders will be learning how to write chapter books?! Thank you for decorating and returning the red folders that were filled with ideas for the students to write about. We will start this week with learning how to plan out our chapter books by thinking about everything we know about a topic and the questions that a reader might have. We will also talk about how pictures are very important in a non fiction book and how we can teach with both our pictures and our words.
Word Study: This week we will be ending Unit 3, digraphs. We will be starting Unit 4 at the end of this week. In Unit 4 we will be learning about bonus letters, for example how some words end with two l’s or two f’s. We will also learn two new trick words: you and your. Please look next week for the information packet about Unit 4.

Math:  We are beginning unit 3: Unknown Numbers in Addition and Subtraction.  Students will learn to model the situation using circle drawings, math mountains, and equations to represent the unknown addend.  This week many of our equations will look this.  4 + ___ = 7.  Story problems might sound like this.  There are 8 cows in the field.  There are 6 brown cows.  The rest are black.  How many cows are black?

Content:  We are continuing our family unit in Social Studies.  This week we will begin our centers to dig deeper on how things have changed over time.  One of our centers is to make a collage of things that represent your family and what you like to do.  Our collection of old magazines is getting a little low, so if you have any old magazines around the house feel free to send them in!  Thank you!

As always if you have any questions, let me know!
