11/13 to 11/17

Hello,

Please return field trips forms by Friday!

This month New Directions is showing how to BE Thankful!  As a way to bring us together as a school community we are going to have an "Appreciation Station" set up for students and families to use at conferences.  At this station you will be able to write a note to someone you are thankful for in your lives. It can be someone from the school or someone from somewhere else in your lives.  Please look for the station outside the cafeteria by the 4K classroom and stop by to let someone know you are thankful for them!

Reading: This week we will learn that when readers are trying to understand and recall information from their books, it helps to read with expression, and make our voices sound smooth.  We will also celebrate all the new knowledge by talking with classmates about what they have learned from books.  We will end the week by working to be persistent when we are stuck on tough words in our books.

Writing: First graders are experts on many topics!  It has been exciting to see how much they are writing in class with this genre.  This week we will be adding fancy, expert words to our writing.  We will also be constructing a non-fiction checklist as a class to help guide our writing.   Once we have a checklist we will set goals to make our all about books the best that they can be.
Word Study: Tomorrow a packet will be coming home to tell you more about unit 4.  We have been practicing bonus letters at the end of a word, like f, l, and s. We have also talked about glued sounds like all.

Math:  Math homework will continue to come home on Wednesdays but will not need to be returned. We are continuing to work on addition and subtraction story problems.  We will be looking closely at the relationship of addition and subtraction.  Students will need to look closely at what the story is asking to determine how to solve the problem.

Content:  We are continuing our study about families today and long ago in our family centers. Coming home tomorrow is an invitation for a grandparent or family member to join us on December 6th from 1-2 pm to help us celebrate the end of this unit.  Students will be developing questions to interview their family member to learn more about their family.  They will then work together to make a display of their learning.  If you have any questions please let me know.

As always if you have any questions, let me know!
