Hello!

This week we will be decorating our door to fit our theme of the year which is to BE ___. We chose the word 'unique' so our theme and will be decorating to show how our class is unique and how each one of us are unique! Feel free to talk to your child about what makes them unique to give them some ideas for later in the week.

Reading: This week in reading we are working on reading our stories fluently. This means paying attention to end marks, changing our voice to match the characters, and reading with feeling. We will also be paying attention to dialogue in the story and see how parts of the book have the narrator setting up the story and how some parts are the characters talking. We will also be starting up book clubs to really get to know some of our favorite characters!

Writing: Students are bringing green  writing folders home today. We are asking students to decorate their folders with pictures (photos or magazines) or drawings/words of things they know a lot about that they could review as part of our opinion writing. This could include movies, toys, games, places, restaurants, books...anything your child has experience with that he or she could write a review about. Please return folders by Wednesday, January 17th. Let me know if you have any questions.
Word Study: This week we will continue with Unit 6!

Math: This week in math we are working on understanding tens and ones.  We will represent 2 digit numbers as tens (sticks) and ones (circles).  We will also read and write number words this week.  We will end the week with adding 1-digit number to a 2-digit number.

Content: This week in science we are learning more about the night sky and the stars! We are learning about constellations (and making our own!), learning about what makes it day and night, and doing a close reading on the book What Makes Day and Night.

Let me know if you have any questions.
